Sonny Rollins had only recently returned to performing from self-imposed hiatus of almost two years when appeared on Jazz Casual. Rollins had an amazingly lyrical ability to improvisationally solo around a melody line, sometimes at seemingly inhuman length, and for his knowledge of musical form. In this set, videotaped "live" at KQED Studios in San Francisco on March 3, 1962 Rollins is accompanied by the incomparable jazz guitarist Jim Hall, as well as the great Bob Cranshaw on bass, Ben Riley on drums. This episode of Ralph J. Gleason's Jazz Casual has not been seen in its entirety in 37 years! It represents one of the first national television appearances by one of the true giants of the jazz saxophone.
